What to expect during a prenatal massage

by Ellen Catalan, LMT All Star Massage and Spa

During your prenatal massage you can expect to be placed in a side lying position, although some practices will use a pregnancy pillow which will allow you to lay on your stomach. The side lying prenatal massage is a combination of Swedish massage and some therapeutic massage focusing on areas of discomfort most pregnant women experience. Pillows are used when side lying to ensure you and your baby are comfortable. In this position the baby in your belly is supported by the pillow, your knees and hips are supported by a pillow between your knees, and a pillow is placed under your head to support your head and shoulder area. I also like to give a small pillow for the mom-to-be to hug. This prevents her from leaning forward. Therapists must use caution when working on the feet. Some therapists say that there are trigger points on your feet that will induce labor. I massage the feet considering that most pregnant women have swollen and achy feet. I just do not use too much pressure and avoid specific points associated with inducing labor. The therapist can massage the entire back and legs into the hip area from side lying position as well. Prenatal massage is a wonderful way for moms to remain relaxed and prepare themselves for labor.
