Becoming a Massage Therapist in Washington State offers a very receptive climate for doing massage especially in the Seattle/Metro area because massage is much more accepted here than in many other places. Massage Therapy has been paid for by health insurance companies here in WA since 1999 with the Every Category Law that was created by the insurance commissioner at that time. Massage Therapists are able to become contracted providers with health insurance companies meaning that we are able to get clients from being on the list of health care providers for each of the insurance companies. (Regence Blue Shield, Premera Blue Cross, Aetna, First Choice to name a few.)
Massage Therapists in WA State are also able to bill car insurance when people have been in an car accident. We are also providers with the Labor and Industries that provides care for injured workers.
Massage is also a necessary part of life here in WA State with so many very active hikers, climbers, cyclists and gardeners. Massage has also been much more common since the early 1980's here as compared to other states where massage is more a luxury even today.
To become a massage therapist in WA State you will need to go to massage school that fulfills the requirements set up by the WA State Board of massage which is currently 500 hours of training. There are separate requirements for people who just want to practice Reflexology which is a specific type of massage that works with the feet and hands and reflex zones of the body. People who want to work as an animal massage therapist will also have different requirements.
