Using Facebook to Promote Your Massage Business

Using Facebook to promote your massage business is another way to increase your range of networking to find clients. It takes a bit to figure out and set up to optimize your privacy and connect with others enough for them to make the call but it can be done with patience and persistence.

The main goal in using Facebook is to get someone to call for an appointment. Your second goal is to get their email address so you can send them your email newsletter or a specific series of emails to educate them more on massage and how it can be applied to their specific condition. You can set up Facebook with the needed tools to make that happen.

If you don't already have a Facebook account you will need one to start out. After you get your profile set up the best thing to do is to set up a fan page. Now it took me about 2 hours of playing around to actually find out how/where to set up a fan page and I think of myself as computer literate!

You can now do that by going to the home page link at the top and then finding the ads and pages section on the left hand side. The best way to really learn how to do it is to use it! You can see my fan page at fan page for my websites. Set up your fan page to have as much info about massage as you can and ask people to ask you questions through the wall or other sections that you can set up. Post to your wall or discussion tab frequently. Use the events tab to announce sales or other special events like an open house.

Use the Static FBML application to create custom pages and add a sign up for your email newsletter form there too. It's a little tricky to figure out the application at first. You can search for it in the application section and add it to your page. To use the application you need to go to the "edit my page" section and then you can add your code or change your settings as to where the app will show up on your page. You can put it on the top tabs or the sidebar. I do both. You can also set it to be a Welcome page where people will land on instead of the usual "Wall" and customize it if you know how to do some html code. It is essential to use this application to at least get people's email addresses for further follow up.

When you ask people to become friends or fans write a short note saying who you are and why you are wanting to connect with them. If you can - make it more about them than you. Show an interest in their business. You can say something like " I have passed by your business and have always just wondered what you do there". (I am not sure if this works but am trying it now myself.)

See how others are Using Facebook

Share Your Story or Facebook Fan page and how you are using it to get new and repeat business.

People can follow your fan page without having to become friends which helps a little from the privacy perspective. If people ask you to become friends you can reply with "Please follow my fan page" and give the address. Then start looking for people to connect with. You can ask current clients to become fans or also look for local businesses and chiropractors offices.

When you are asking clients to become 'friends' it is important to create a separate list which you can do in your friends list and keep them separate from your real friends. You can then set your privacy settings so that your client 'friends' won't see certain things on your profile and other sections. You don't want them to see all the things your crazy friends from high school are doing or that you are playing games all day on Facebook! (I personally just keep my personal and business separate by creating fan pages. It just makes for clearer relationships with clients.)

Once people become fans and friends their fans and friends are always looking to see what others are doing and may become interested in getting a massage!

In my opinion, Facebook shouldn't really work for generating business but people are crazy for it for some reason. Using Facebook is more hit and miss because when you post on your wall or page there is only a very slight chance that people following you will ever even really see the message. You are much better off having a highly optimized website that gets found by the search engines for the words "massage, your city" and having an opt-in email newsletter. The website also needs to be filled with (about 30 pages or more is better) with high quality information on massage, how it works, how muscles work, how tension works and the effects of stress. Don't be put off by writing. It is really just putting down the things that you should be saying to clients already! Just write what you say!

So share your Facebook fan page and your ideas for using Facebook. Let's see what is working and what isn't!!
