Understanding Money

Understanding Money is one of the difficult challenges for most everyone but for some reason the massage profession seems to attract many who say "it isn't about the money".

After 20 years in the massage profession and reading many books on money, finances and the psychology of money - It is about the money.

Robert Kiyosaki in his latest book The Conspiracy of the Rich" says that saying it isn't about the money is now obsolete. The truth is that everyone needs money and is influenced by money. Your beliefs about money are created at an early stage in life and may be what attracted you to the massage profession in the first place. So many people get this idea that helping people is more noble and that it should not be associated with making money. They think that making money doing something that you love and is so very powerful has to mean that you won't make money doing so.

Many massage therapist also think that it is more noble to not take money for something so wonderful as doing massage. Living simply is different from making the choice to do without things because you can't afford it.

The thing is that money often has so much power over people. The main reason is that we are uneducated about money. We are taught to balance a check book but have no idea how money is created or where it comes from and how debt and inflation impact our money. It isn't just massage therapists that are uneducated - it is most of the country.

The thing about becoming a massage therapist is that you are only one person and can only see so many people in a week. Your income is limited by the number of hours you can see people. You can offer more services and enhance your techniques by taking classes so that you can keep increasing your rates but your income will still be limited.

These days it is necessary to supplement your income and create multiple streams of income. Robert Kiyosaki recommends investing in things that create cash flow rather than capital gains. Starting and running a mult-therapist massage business or buying a massage franchise can be a better way to go than just doing all of the massage yourself.

While many will say that they didn't come to this profession to do that - that they just want to do massage, it is just another way to support the belief that you can not have a steady flow of income and be wealthy in this profession.

The truth is you can. It isn't always easy. It takes learning about money so that you understand not just how your own money works but how the economy works so that you can make better decisions about your money. It is also a process of uncovering your unconscious beliefs and programming about money so you can overcome the underearning that is so common in the massage and other helping professions.

For further reading:

Making the Switch to Being Rich This is a great book about how he was brainwashed as a teenager and the process of undoing the brainwashing. He then takes what he has learned and applies it to the aspect of making money for massage therapists. You can make money in this profession and make lots and it isn't bad to do so and it isn't about greed. The more you make actually, the more you can do for others in the way of bringing massage to people who truly can't afford it.
