Tennessee Massage Licensing
Tennessee Massage Licensing is regulated by the Department of Health and the Tennessee Massage Licensing Board There are approximately 4,000 massage therapists in Tennessee. They require massage therapists to have 500 hrs of education and pass the NCETMB. There is also something called a massage therapy establishment permit that you need to get to own a massage business. The only definition I could find of massage was very simple: "Massage/bodywork/somatic – The manipulation of the soft tissues of the body with the intention of positively affecting the health and well being of the client." I could not find anything on whether or not any disciplines such as reflexology were exempt from licensing. Laws are subject to change. Be sure to contact the State massage licensing board with all of your questions regarding any questions you have on Massage Licensing. If you are considering becoming a massage therapist, you will have to decide if a career in massage is the right one for you.
