Structural Integration

Structural Integration is one of the many various types of massage or more specifically bodywork. The word structural integration was the original name of "Rolfing" but the name never really stuck.

There are now many others who have created various off shoots of Rolfing and using Ida Rolf's basic principles of structural integration. The basic concept is that the alignment of the body can be improved through working the body in a specific 10 (or 11) session protocol that addresses the alignment of the body with gravity. A body that is more balanced is overall healthier and more relaxed allowing for higher achievements in all areas of life.

In some states you can go through a training program for Structural Integration and be qualified to sit for the massage exam. You will have to check in your specific state. The reason for this is because structural integration is based on different principles and practices. It is so different in my opinion, that it should not be included in any massage licensing process.

There are many branches of Structural Integration or that come from Structural Integration:

  • Aston Patterning - Judith Aston
  • Hellerwork - Joseph Heller
  • Anatomy Trains - Tom Myers
  • Zentherapy - William "Dub" Leigh's work
  • John Latz - Structural Integration
  • Soma Neuromuscular Therapy
  • Rolfing
