Shiatsu massage
Shiatsu was made popular in the 1950's when it was introduced in the US by Toshiko Phipps. The history of this type of massage is quite rich and too much information to cover in this short overview. There are many types of Shiatsu such as Zen Shiatsu, Integrative eclectic Shiatsu, Five Element Shiatsu, ANMA Therapy. Most of them are based on the original anma therapy of Japan. There are also many different lines of shiatsu therapy.
The main objective of this type of massage is to stimulate chi (life force) in the body so that it flows freely through the meridian system (lines of energy running through the body). It focuses on balancing the life force and relying on the body's own healing systems. Shiatsu is used to treat various conditions such as digestive disorders, fatigue, high blood pressure, headaches, asthma and many other conditions. It can also be used to prevent sickness and disease.
Shiatsu massage therapists use finger, elbows and sometimes even feet to apply pressure to the tsubos or points. Clients usually remain dressed and lie on the floor on a mat or low shiatsu massage table. Practitioners will asses the body in different ways such as tongue diagnosis, pulses and hara(abdominal energy). There are 360 tsubo points along the meridians on each side of the body for a total of 720 points plus an additional 300 points. Oriental Medicine theory says that disease occurs because of a blockage in these tsubos and meridians.
Learning shiatsu massage is more of a lifestyle training and working with a traditional teacher learning their ways and methods of therapy. Some of the more popular types of shiatsu are Zen Shiatsu developed by Shizuto Masunaga and Tsubo Point Therapy developed by Katsusuke Serizawa.
