Reiki for Massage Therapists
Reiki is the Japanese word meaning "Universal Life Force". There is some controversy over where Reiki originated with some saying that it used to be the practice of Tibetan Monks 2,500 years ago. There is some mention that it used to be called raku kei. In the late 1800's, Dr Mikao Usui who was a Japanese scholar and Christian Monk began researching the physical healings of Christ and Buddah. He discovered something that resembled the early documents on raku kei. He taught his method throughout Japan until WWII ended the line of Reiki practitioners except for Madame Hawayo Takata who practiced and taught Reiki in Hawaii. In 1974 she began teaching it to others and re-created the practice of Reiki. Reiki masters as they are called are 'attuned' in their training which means that they are taught to tap into a persons energy and accept the Reiki frequency. Reiki is really channeled energy and a Reiki master is someone who facilitates the process. There are 3 different levels of attunement. It is light touch to the body and not really any type of massage. It is used to facilitate healing of chronic disease, injuries, relieve physical and emotional pain and many other things. It can also be used with animals and plants. It can be incorporated into a massage practice or used alone. Anyone can use and practice Reiki. There are some states such as FL that include Reiki in their scope of practice laws which means that people who want to practice Reiki as a career needs to have their massage therapy license. If you want to start a business using only Reiki as your tool, you will need a business license as well as liability insurance which you can get from one of the massage associations or the Massage Council.
