Reflexology Massage

Reflexology massage is a type of massage that focuses on the foot and the hand using specific points that have been mapped out to relieve pain, restore health and increase energy. The theory is that the various points in the feet and hands correspond to different parts of the body and working those points will affect those corresponding areas. There is supposedly crystals deposits that build up in the feet that when broken up work to restore health.

Reflexology has been around for quite some time and used in India, China and Japan. Western reflexology was developed by William Fitzgerald who was an ear, nose and throat specialist. His initial research found that there were different zones in the body and that putting constant pressure on various points in the body affected different areas in the zones. Eunice Ingram who was a zone therapy massage therapist developed the foot map that we know of now.

Reflexology divides the foot into five longitudinal zones and 3 lateral zones. There are many different hand techniques used to apply pressure such as thumb walking, finger walking, thumb hook, rotating on a point, pivoting on a point and finger rolling. Sessions last generally 30-60 minutes and can often be quite painful. The client is usually sitting or lying on a massage table.

To become certified in Reflexology usually requires 100 hours of training or more. Some states include Reflexology in their massage licensing divisions which is very controversial since reflexology deals only with the feet and hands and not the whole body as massage does. It also uses the zone system which is not usually taught in massage school. Check your massage state board to figure out what licensing requirements you will need to practice Reflexology.

If you have a Reflexology school, class, or story of healing through Reflexology please share it through this form below to have it included in this website.
