Mobile Massage Business

One of the latest branches of the massage profession to emerge is the mobile massage business. Massage therapists are going out into people's homes providing massage therapy services. While it is a creative way of getting new clients it does take some planning and preparation. Packing up all of your gear and equipment and moving it into a person's home is very physically demanding. You will also find that people's homes are not set up to accommodate a massage table and have room around the table for you to work comfortably.

First off, many massage therapists think that by taking their services into people's homes and not having the overhead of an office that they will charge less to clients. You actually should actually be charging more because of the travel time, equipment moving time and the risk of going into a stranger's home. It is advisable to set up some policies and procedures such as only going into a person's home to do 2 or more massages.

In a mobile massage business there is a risk of going into a strangers home. If it is possible, you might want to start your mobile massage business by only going into friends and friends of friends or family until you develop a clientele and group of connections. You can set up a security system where you call a friend or family member and inform them of your appointments and call them when you safely leave an appointment.

The advantages of course are the convenience for the client to be massaged in the comfort of their own home where they can fall asleep or move directly into a bathtub or hot tub to enhance the relaxation effect.

In summary:

  • Set fees to include all you extra time and expenses
  • Set up a security system to protect yourself when traveling alone into strangers homes. Call someone when you arrive and leave.
  • Consider setting up a regular office space to provide more security for yourself and less work in moving equipment and just use mobile massage business to build your main business.
  • Purchase a lightweight aluminum leg type table to move more easily.
  • Create a business plan to include your marketing plan and income strategies. See Start a Massage Business Section.
  • Create a website to promote your business.
  • You can also set up a chair massage business where you go into people's offices and provide seated chair massage for special events or on a regular basis. See the Chair Massage Business Section.
