Massage Therapist Salary

The massage therapist salary statistics are incomplete for the profession. The US Bureau of Labor and Statistics points out that:

This occupation includes a large percentage of part-time and self-employed workers.

That means that salary statistics are not complete. Most massage therapists jobs are also subcontractor positions which means that you are self employed so those job figures are not included in job statistics.

So there are no really accurate massage therapist salary statistics.

Even though most massage therapists start their own business, there are more jobs becoming available. Most entry level jobs pay around $12-$25 an hour depending on their location and type of spa or clinic. The thing is that you only get paid that rate when you are doing a massage. When you don't have a massage client you are usually paid minimum wage and are required to clean and answer phones or are sent home early.

Because massage therapy jobs are fairly a recent experience, most massage employers are not aware of massage therapist skills and needs. Massage therapists are often treated unfairly by massage employers who don't know much about massage or what it takes to do a good massage and what a massage therapist needs to do that massage each and every time.

Even though the salary statistics don't look great, massage can still be a great choice of professions. You can make $45 an hour and more as a subcontractor if you are motivated and want something more than just a job. It also takes more job hunting skills than actual massage skills to find or create such a job.

There is lots of research being done on how massage is beneficial for many health conditions and new jobs are being created all the time. You just have to have the professional skills and prove to potential employers that you know how to get and retain clients (which is what it takes to run a successful massage business). You have to let potential employers know that you excel above and beyond others in your customer service skills and in educating clients as to what getting regular weekly massage can do.

Finding a job that pays more than $25 an hour is rare but it is possible. As a profession taking these low paying jobs in franchises in some ways may be hurting the profession as well as your income. You can make more if you give more and have the skills to get and keep clients. We teach people how to treat us and in taking low paying jobs massage therapists are telling massage employers that it is OK to pay them less than they really need to make. When more massage therapists start to hold out for higher paying jobs the massage therapist salary levels will increase accordingly.

You can learn more about how to go into the massage profession with a different attitude that will allow you to find or create one of those higher paying jobs and create a higher paying massage therapy salary when you purchase my Ebook the "Massage Therapy Career Guide -The Truth About Becoming a Massage Therapist". Choosing a career more consciously rather than just trying to find a job you will be well ahead of most people entering the profession as well as those who are already out there!
