Massage Ethics Books
Here is my list of massage ethics books for massage therapists:
The Educated Heart: Professional Boundaries for Massage Therapists, Bodyworkers, and Movement Teachers by Nina McIntosh. A great book to learn more about the therapeutic relationship and dealing with clients and the issues that being a massage therapist can bring up. It covers most everything from charging for your services, dealing with the big E (erection), how to work with transference, how to uncover your own countertransference issues and much more. From the moment the client thinks about calling you for a massage, the transference begins. From the moment you decide to become a massage therapist, the countertransference begins.Quotes from this book:
Some practitioners call it "holding the space." Others call it "creating a container". They recognize that clients need to have a special environment that is solely focused on their well being. Careless framework can interfere with the therapeutic process.
We all have blind spots that interfere with our effectiveness. Even if we have had no significant childhood trauma, we bring to our work all of our personal history.

The Ethics of Touch: The Hands-on Practitioner's Guide to Creating a Professional, Safe and Enduring Practice - by Cherie Sohnen Moe. Another great must have book for massage therapists on understanding the therapeutic relationship. More of a textbook for massage school that explains the terminology and dynamics of the therapeutic relationship.
Quotes from the Ethics of Touch:
Transference is a normal, unconscious psychological phenomenon that inevitably appears during the therapeutic process.
Professional helping relationships usually have a strong transference element in which the parent-child relationship is unconsciously re-established. In transference, unresolved needs, feelings and issues from childhood are transferred onto the helper.
Keeping The Professional Promise by Cidalia Paiva This is a difficult book to find and I think she has an updated version called "Ethics and Professionalism for Regulated Healthcare Professionals Massage Therapist Edition".
Quotes from this book
A Code of Ethics without a clear statement of purpose is much like having a map to help us find our destination without a reason to go there in the first place.
As health care practitioners, the greatest gift we have to offer our clients apart from our knowledge and skills is our presence. The person that we are and bring to therapeutic relationship is an extremely important part of the healing process
Ethics for Massage Therapistsby Terrie Yardley-Nohr. This book starts with a good explanation of beliefs and how they are created. Your belief system is usually filled with many unconscious beliefs that will affect your success as a massage therapist.
Quotes from this book:
Clients, other health professionals and the general public will gain a strong respect for who you are when they understand the benefits of massage and see how your values and beliefs are part of who you are as a practitioner.
