Massage Business Licensing

Getting Started as a massage therapist requires that you understand massage business licensing.

Your Massage Professional license is different than a business license. Your professional license is usually overseen by a Massage State Board or department of occupations and professions. You will have to contact the state board in your state to find out how to get and maintain your massage professional license. It will usually require a specific amount of training in massage along with continuing education to maintain it. You can see the section on massage licensing for more information.

Some states such as FL require a massage establishment license or premise license or something to that effect.

Massage business licensing is a state and or city business license that is required for you to do business as a massage therapist. You will have to find out what is required in your state, city or even county. Each state is different. Like here in WA a Master Business license is required. (See Doing Business in WA.)

Other things to consider are zoning permits to see if you can conduct business in certain zones and if you are opening a home massage office you may need to be in a specific zone or have a home office license.

Your massage business may also have to be registered to pay state/city/federal taxes. If sales tax is required you will have to contact your state to find out how to collect and pay those taxes.

You can add information about obtaining professional licensing or other permits that are needed in your area or state using the form below.
