Male Massage Therapists

Male Massage Therapists are a minority in the massage profession. Males often find it more difficult to overcome some of the challenges associated with being a male in the massage profession.

Some of the challenges are around the feelings that clients and potential clients have in regards to being massaged by a male massage therapist. Many women especially those with past abuse issues may find that they don't trust men as their massage therapists. Even without past abuse issues many women find it difficult to relax around men thinking that men only want one thing (sex). Men are also often uncomfortable with getting a massage from a male because of their own trust issues with men. Men fear that enjoying a massage from a male might mean that they are gay. Still with these regularly occurring issues a male can be successful in the massage profession if they are secure in themselves and trust themselves.

The truth is that many of these challenges bring up deeper issues that people have in trusting men and people in general. Getting regular massage from a trustworthy, nurturing male can help heal the bonding and attachment issues that are underneath the fears getting massaged by a male.

In some ways I have seen many spas and clinics where males work actually promote the issues more by asking a caller "Would you prefer a female therapist?" making the caller think that there might be something wrong with getting a massage by a male. A better approach would be to say - "I can give you a 3:00 with Daryl" (and be clear if the males name can also be a female name.)

Becoming a male massage therapist will also challenge your beliefs about yourself and give males an opportunity to understand themselves more.
