Indiana Massage Licensing

Indiana Massage Licensing is handled by the State Board of Massage Therapy Professional Licensing Agency. They require 500 hours and taking one of these exams - MBLEx or NCETMB. There is currently a Grandfathering provision until June 30, 2009

Indiana Massage licensing defines massage as:

Sec. 4. "Massage therapy":(1) means the application of massage techniques on the humanbody;(2) includes:(A) the use of touch, pressure, percussion, kneading, movement,positioning, nonspecific stretching, stretching within the normalanatomical range of movement, and holding, with or without theuse of massage devices that mimic or enhance manual measures;and(B) the external application of heat, cold, water, ice, stones,lubricants, abrasives, and topical preparations that are notclassified as prescription drugs; and(3) does not include:(A) spinal manipulation; and(B) diagnosis or prescribing drugs for which a license is required.

The Illinois State Board of Massage Therapy will accept the following examinations for the purposes of certification. * Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) * National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage (NCETM) * National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) * National Board Certification Agency National Certificaiton Examination (NBCA NCE)
