Hydrotherapy Massage
Hydrotherapy massage is the process of using water as therapy in
a massage or spa session. Hydrotherapy can be most anything from steam treatments, ice or heat applications to various baths and special body showers. The temperature of the water is of course the key to many of the various types of hydrotherapy massage. Cold is used for inflammation. Warm is used to help relax muscles and relieve joint stiffness or pain. The temperature you use will depend on the results that you want to achieve.
Some common types of hydrotherapy are:
Hot tubs and whirlpool baths
Steam rooms
Baths
Float tanks
Showers
Compresses
Internal hydrotherapy such as colonics
Ice baths, ice packs, cold plunge baths
Hydrotherapy is very common in spas and resorts as a way to pamper guests. It can also be a big part of a medical spa's treatment and support for people with various health challenges. Basic massage school usually will cover basic hydrotherapy applications. Many spas will teach you various hydrotherapy techniques and how to use their equipment. There are also schools that specialize in spa hydrotherapy massage classes.
