Geriatric Massage
Geriatric Massage is just applying massage principles to older clients and understanding the geriatric populations needs. It is becoming common in nursing homes, hospice facilities, assisted living communities and even in hospitals.
The word “geriatric” refers to health impairments that are associated with the later years of life, usually age 65 and older. Hence, this type of massage takes age-related health conditions into account. Health conditions such as diabetes, dementia, Alzheimer and others need special attention. Healthy elderly populations also have special considerations such as the thinning of the skin and increased bruising to just name a few. To do this successfully requires theoretical knowledge and technical skills that go beyond what is usually taught in massage schools.
Elderly clients also can not usually lie flat on the massage table or turn over easily. Learning to massage with these special needs is required.
Geriatric clients also can be very healthy and active adults who just want to use massage to keep them that way.
The DAY-BREAK Geriatric Massage Project was founded by Dietrich Miesler in 1982. Now known as the DAY-BREAK Geriatric Massage Institute, the organization currently has six accredited instructors who teach weekend workshops in Geriatric Massage.
