Equine Massage Therapy

Equine Massage Therapy is becoming more and more popular. Horses are expensive 'family' members who also need massage. Sport horses, dressage horses, Canadian Royal Mounted Police horses and the horse in your backyard.

In the late 1970's, Jack Meagher who was an avid sports massage therapist and author of a book called "Sports Massage", began to apply his massage techniques to thoroughbreds and soon became a valuable member of the US Equestrian Team.

In 1989, Mary Schreiber, a student of Jack Meagher, founded Equissage Inc., a certification program for Equine Sports Massage Therapists based in Round Hill, Virginia.

Currently there is some controversy over who is able to legally do equine massage as the veterinarians have jurisdiction over animals and many people doing equine massage have had little to no training. Horses were getting hurt at the race tracks by inexperienced people working on them.

There are currently some states adopting laws to license equine massage therapists. WA State is one such state that regulates equine massage therapists under RCW 18.108.230

While this is the only state that I currently know of that licenses equine massage therapists, I am sure that more will be following as WA State has been one of the leaders in licensing of massage therapists.
