Do you already need to know how to massage..

Do you already need to know how to massage or be good at it to seek this as a career? The idea of being a massage therapist sounds great & I would really love to learn how. But I don't know exactly how to massage I guess? & it discourages me because I don't want to look stupid.

Answer:
That is what you learn in massage school. No one really knows how to do it without training.

Wow that's a tough one

There is so much discussion on this very topic in the massage community itself. Of course we all innately know how to massage. A mother rubs a childs tummy. A spouse works out a kink in your shoulder. But when it comes to getting an education a massage school is your best bet. You will then feel confident in what you do. And know that as Hippoccrates said you will 'do no harm'. There are certain soft tissue manipulations that quiet, some that do not, and some simply that are contraindicated in certain conditions. Knowing these things coupled with confidence in your techniques make for a wonderful safe environment where clients can come. Why not check out Julie's site and find a school in your area. Most offer programs of 600+ hours and include lots of clinical practice. You will be glad you did.
