Craniosacral Therapy for Massage Therapists

See what others Have to say about this craniosacral therapy.

Add Your Own Story or Information

Craniosacral therapy also known as cranial sacral therapy is a type of hands on technique that works with the bones of the cranium and the sacrum to facilitate healing. It uses an extremely soft touch and requires a sensitive touch to increase the flow of cerebro-spinal fluid within the body. Massage therapists as well as osteopaths, Naturopaths and chiropractors also practice this type of therapy.

The exact history of craniosacral therapy is hard to pinpoint. Current teachers have various versions of the history on their websites. There are a few main teachers of the work who are known world wide such as John Upledger and Hugh Milne. There are also many less well known teachers who are just as effective in teaching this method.

Early pioneers in the field of craniosacral work are Andrew Taylor Still and Dr. William Sutherland an Osteopath in the 1900's. Still founded the American School of Osteopathy in 1891. Sutherland was a student of Stills.

The theory is that the cranium, spine and sacrum are all connected by a continuous membrane called the dura matter which houses the brain and central nervous system.

John Upldeger a orthopedic physician also noticed during surgery that the movement of the sacral bones followed a pattern that was reflected in the cranial bones. He created the craniosacral therapy approach.
