Chi Nei Tsang

Chi Nei Tsang is also known as internal organ massage. It was developed to relieve obstructions of chi energy in the internal organs to restore health and vitality. The theory is that internal blockages of chi can disrupt the flow of energy which leads to disease. It is a direct massage to the abdomen and focuses on the energy pathways of the body (meridians).

In this system of bodywork, the navel center is thought to be where energy enters and exits the body. This is also called the tan tien or hara. The massage works to stimulate this area. It also involves looking at the navel for various signs of distortions or pulling. A practitioner will look for hot and cold sensations and also use face reading as a part of their assessments.

Recipients are clothed and lie on their back usually with the knees up to relax the abdomen. The practitioner will use their hands and elbow to do various techniques that may include rocking, shaking, pushing and pulling on the abdomen.

If you are a massage therapist and wanting to learn Chi Nei Tsang be sure to check your laws and scope of practice issues in working with internal structures.
