In British Columbia the regulatory body for the profession of massage therapy is governed by the

College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia.

Only members of the College can call themselves a "registered massage therapist", "massage therapist", "registered massage practitioner", "massage practitioner", "or any other name or description that implies that the person is registered with the College." Membership requires the current minimum 3,000 hours or approximately three years of training.

Those people practicing outside of the scope of the College in BC are not regulated as such, but they are trained and certified in a particular type of massage. Typically, other practitioners utilize designations such as Shiatsu practitioner, Certified Aromatherapist, Aromatherapy Massage Practitioner, Reflexologist, Relaxation Massage, Acupressurist, etc.

The Registration process includes a written and practical exam and the yearly Renewal Fee (CAN) $330 a year, plus liability insurance is required. 24 CEUs are required every 2 years in British Columbia, Canada.

To practice massage therapy in Ontario, Canada, you must obtain a Certificate of Registration from the

College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO).

Rigorous written and practical examinations must be completed. All registration requirements are set by the CMTO under the Massage Therapy Act, the Regulated Health Professions Act and Ontario's Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council (HPRAC). You cannot practice as a massage therapist unless you are registered with the CMTO. Only the CMTO, the provincial regulatory body, can register Massage Therapists.
