Bioenergetic Therapy - Alexander Lowen
Bioenergetic Analysis is a unique way of combining body therapy
(massage) with psychotherapy. The therapy is a combination of deep breathing, talk therapy and bioenergetic exercises to help release blocked tensions and feelings. It was created by Alexander Lowen in the early 1950's after he studied with Wilhelm Reich (a student of Freuds). Reich believed that our repressed emotions are stored in the muscles of the body. He called this armouring. Reich also coined the concept of orgone energy. Lowen renamed it Bioenergy.
Grounding was another concept introduced by Dr. Lowen. The theory is that in order to have good energetic contact it is necessary for energy to flow freely to those areas of our body with which we make contact with the world: the sense organs, the arms and hands, legs and feet, the skin and sexual areas. The person who is well grounded is said to have "his feet on the ground". He feels the connection between his feet and the ground he is standing on.
Bioenergetic Analysis requires extensive training as a psychotherapist and bodyworker.
Alexander Lowen is the author of many books listed below:
