Become a Massage Therapist

Do you want to become a massage therapist?

Massage Therapy is in demand. More people are using it than ever and more people including the medical profession are starting to understand the value of massage in helping people with all sorts of diseases and conditions - carpal tunnel, back and neck pain, muscle strains/sprains, headaches, fibromyalgia, herniated discs and of course Stress which is really the cause of most diseases.

But you have to keep in mind that most massage schools are in the business of filling their schools with students. here are some of the facts that you will need to know about becoming a massage therapist.

  • Most massage therapists start their own business. There are jobs available but most jobs are actually sub-contractor positions which means you are starting your own business.

  • Full time in the massage profession is approximately 20-30 hours. Most people can't work longer than that because of the physical demands of the work. It requires a regular regimen of self care that includes getting massage each week, working out, eating right and taking care of yourself emotionally/spiritually so that you don't burn out.

  • While the average fee for a massage in the US is about $63 ($55-$100 per hour), you don't actually make that much. If you have your own business you need to deduct business expenses. If you work for someone you probably only get paid $12-$30 an hour.

  • The high levels of burnout are often mentioned on job boards and other places. The thing is that we do not have any accurate statistics on this. It is considered to be a helping profession which usually does have a higher rate of burnout but there are many things that you can do to preserve your body and career from burnout.

  • Jobs are a fairly new phenomenon. You can get regular jobs at places like Massage Envy or other massage franchises. The pay there is low but you will get steady work. You can use it for part time work or also learn the ropes to start your own business.

  • Helping others often brings up many issues around money and charging for massage services. Because it is such a caring field of work many think that massage should be given at low cost. The truth is that it is hard work, demanding and you can still care. You can get paid well for doing your work.

The truth is that you can help others AND you can make what you need to make to be a wealthy massage therapist! You can learn to be a very successful massage therapist.
