Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy Massage is the art and science of using essential oils (scented oils) as a part of the therapeutic massage process. Just because a spa or massage therapist uses an oil or lotion that is scented does not actually mean that they are doing aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is a very indepth and detailed science where the practitioner is knowledgeable about the many properties of oils and how and when to use them. The oils therapeutic benefits are absorbed through the skin or inhaled. When absorbed through the skin warming of the skin may be done prior to applying the oils.
Essential oils are mixed with carrier oils to a specific dilution for various conditions and also the make up of the person receiving the treatment.
The oils come from all parts of the various plants - leaves, bark, flowers, roots, fruit and resins. The chemical composition of each part can change according to how they are grown. Essences are distilled from the various parts of the plants through various processes. The quality of the distillation process can affect the quality and scent of the oil and affect the process of aromatherapy.
A skilled aromatherapist will have taken extensive training in understanding the various properties and uses of the oils. Training is usually a few years. Massage therapists often just use essential oils without such extensive training. While it is safe for the most part, there are some concerns in handling and applying oils for the best results. There are some things that can go wrong as in getting too much oil or the wrong kind of oil. Be sure to ask the person using oils how much training they have.
