About Massage Envy

About Massage Envy --- as an educator for the past ten year, I have observed the students are getting younger and younger - it's a tough economy so all those corporate folks we once had in our programs ... because that wanted to do something different are hanging on to their jobs and retirement (if they have one) ... so I see ME as a place to start --- I have students who are recent graduates from high school (and no, I am NOT a big fan of having such young students in massage ... I would say I average about 5% in each class that truly demonstrate the maturity and professionalism to be able to do this work effectively - generally it's a rare combination of skills in someone so young) ... but they are NOT going out to launch their own business - at least right away -- they need a paycheck ... if more LMTs owned Massage Envy franchises - this might well become a wonderful mentoring opportunity for young therapists ... and that doesn't mean that it couldn't be a supportive environment even if owned by a non-LMT -It's a management philosophy and it comes within the individual who owns it --- --- --- I don't think it has to be a HORRIBLE place to be ... depending on how the newly-licensed LMTs are scheduled -- no more than 5 hours/day with breaks ... so for a 10 hour day - I would have two overlapping shifts of therapists who were seeing roughly 5 clients a day --- Every new professional has some dues to pay --- so the lower pay (lower than those of use in private practice) is part of paying their dues.
ME is making massage a bit more available to 'the masses' by lowering the prices --- and if LMTs lose clients simply because of the lower price - they really never were clients - just "visitors" and the next LMT that advertises even lower - can expect to lose them again ...
It does require that every LMT currently in private practice do their jobs VERY WELL --- I have always found long term clients are extremely loyal but we earn their loyalty by being high service and our willingness to go that extra mile - so it puts all of us on our toes - and that's not all bad, either.
