Abdominal Massage

Abdominal massage is taught in most basic massage school courses. There are 4 layers of muscles in the abdomen that cover the organs and vital areas. There are also deeper muscles in the abdomen called the Iliacus and the Psoas muscle which are sometimes referred to as one muscle - the iliopsoas. The superficial abdominal massage can help in relieving symptoms of constipation and problematic digestion in adults as well as children and infants. A clockwise motion is recommended for abdominal massage to improve digestion.

The latest exercise routines all include some form of core or abdominal strengthening exercises. The abdominal muscles support and move the body. Problems with knees and feet or even neck and shoulders can really be a core abdominal weakness or tightness.

The Iliopsoas muscle is deep in the abdomen near the spine. It's role is to actually separate the vertebrae and provide disc space for the vertebra. There are two psoas muscles- one on each side of the spine. When one side is tighter it is also weaker. When one side is weaker the other side is doing all of the work. An imbalanced pair of psoas muscles requires deep abdominal massage which is usually done by an advanced massage therapist.

There are also other types of abdominal massage such as Mayan Abdominal massage. This is from their website www.arvigomassage.com:

The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage TM are founded on the ancient Mayan technique of abdominal massage which is an external non invasive manipulation that repositions internal organs that have shifted, thereby restricting the flow of blood, lymph, nerve and chi.

Based on over thirty years of training and experience in massage, naprapathy, herbology, and spiritual healing, Dr. Rosita Arvigo developed these techniques which now bear her name. This modality incorporates a holistic approach to health care which includes massage, anatomy and physiology, herbology, nutrition, and emotional and spiritual healing. Dr. Arvigo believes that with any natural healing technique, these areas must be simultaneously addressed to promote optimal health.

Dr. Arvigo learned these techniques from her mentor, Don Elijio Panti, the great Maya Shaman of Belize, Central America with whom she apprenticed for ten years. Don Elijio believed that a woman's center is her uterus. "If a woman's uterus is out of balance, so is she," he would say.
